HISTORY

In May of 2004, Simpson Resource Company adopted a new name: Green Diamond Resource Company. While the name is new, the company's roots run deep in the Pacific Northwest.

The first Simpson enterprise was founded in 1890 by Solomon Simpson in the tiny town of Matlock, Wash., about 65 miles southwest of Seattle.

Sol soon established a reputation for innovation in forestry. He introduced the use of horses in the forests, was one of the first to offer loggers a company health plan, and introduced technology into forestry in the form of the "Walking Dudley," a mechanized log-hauling machine.

Sol also bucked convention in his approach to forest ownership. At the turn of the last century it was common practice for logging companies to abandon their lands after they had harvested the timber. Sol recognized that the end of the forest resource was inevitable if this practice continued. He made it a policy to retain logged land in order to grow timber for the generations ahead. This early commitment to sustainable forestry not only made environmental sense, but also good business sense as well. Practicing sustainable forestry ensured a steady supply of timber for the future, and a steady business for us.

Today, more than 117 years later, under the name Green Diamond Resource Company, Sol's direct descendents oversee the management of timberlands with the same commitment to responsible, innovative, long-term forest stewardship that was established by their pioneering ancestor.
