EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS

Green Diamond Resource Company partner with a number of organizations to provide a variety of natural resource-based educational opportunities. Here is a description of some of the education programs Green Diamond helps to sponsor in California, Washington and Oregon:

California

In the spring of each year, we offer tours of our Nature Trail and our tree nursery to school groups within Humboldt, Del Norte and Trinity counties. Each year, between 400 and 600 children, ages 4 through 18, have an opportunity to learn about the scientific principles, which we use to manage our timberlands for sustainable forestry.

Each tour group, comprised of up to 30 children (with chaperones), joins in the adventure on our Nature Trail. The trail, constructed in 1992, guides visitors through three ecotypes (riparian, mature closed-canopy timber, and young growth) and allows viewing of past and present timber management practices. In addition, our visitors are shown some wildlife habitat features that are common in our forests.

All tours are guided by personnel from Green Diamond's forestry and/or wildlife departments who discuss our timber and wildlife management practices. There is also time for plenty of questions from inquisitive minds.

The trail is less than a quarter-mile long and takes approximately one hour to complete. Depending on the desires of the teacher and the time available, classes can also tour our forest tree nursery to learn how we start growing the forests of the future. After each tour, a pizza lunch is provided for our visitors. Additional questions may be answered at that time.

The children are then sent home with worksheets, pencils, erasers and educational materials as reminders of their time at Green Diamond Resource Company.

For information regarding tours, please contact Linda Herron at our Korbel facility, telephone number: (707) 668-4458.
