Maintaining Essential Habitat
Habitat Conservation Plans
Much of Green Diamond's Washington timberlands are managed under a groundbreaking Habitat Conservation Plan (HCP) that protects more than 50 fish and wildlife species. An HCP is a voluntary forest management plan developed in cooperation with the landowner and a number of governmental agencies. HCPs provide habitat protection beyond that required by current state forest practices regulations.
Our Washington HCP covers 31 aquatic species including coho, chum and chinook salmon; bull trout and searun cutthroat trout; a variety of amphibious species; and 21 ground-dwelling species, marbled murrelets, bald eagles and a number of other species on our ownership in Mason, Grays Harbor and Thurston counties in Washington state.
This HCP marks the first time that endangered species and water quality issues have been addressed together, effectively bridging the Endangered Species and Clean Water acts. Green Diamond worked with the National Marine Fisheries Service, the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, the Environmental Protection Agency and the Washington Department of Ecology to pull the plan together.
Our Washington plan is only the latest in a series of HCPs in play on our forestlands. Our California timberlands were the first in the nation to be awarded an HCP for the Northern Spotted Owl. The company is currently in negotiations with the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service and the National Marine Fisheries Service to develop separate HCPs for both marbled murrelets and the coho salmon.
Objectives of Our Washington HCP
- Protecting and maintaining trees and brush around streams to preserve natural stream conditions.
- Ensuring the natural flow of water.
- Minimizing the effect of logging activities on adjacent streams.
- Conserving stream and wetland habitats with adjacent areas.
- Conserving and developing older forests in select areas.
- Conserving and developing snags (standing dead trees) to enhance wildlife habitat.
- Implementing other conservation prescriptions for the benefit of other wildlife species.
