Getting Involved and Giving Back

We have a longstanding commitment to bettering our communities by contributing to worthwhile causes and organizations.

We focus our philanthropic efforts on the areas where we operate, providing community grants, donations and academic scholarships. The organizations we partner with vary by region. For example, our Washington operations have supported United Way of Mason County for decades, and over a five-year period, our Shelton office donated $1 million to the local YMCA. Meanwhile, our California operations have launched blood drives and supported Toys for Tots. Recently, they donated $100,000 to a nearby hospital.

Our mission in this work is to improve our communities’ quality of life and serve as a catalyst for employees to become involved. We encourage our team to give back through fundraising and volunteerism and to become leaders in the places where they live and work.

Deploying Resources to Our Operational Communities

We support local communities through grants and fundraising, including programs to match employees’ contributions. We recently worked with Fidelity Workplace Giving to create an Impact Fund that matches employee donations up to $3,000. We also have local funds that deploy community grants—typically ranging from $500 to $5,000—to qualifying organizations. Finally, through the Simpson Family Fund, which is named for the family that owns Green Diamond, we have spent years making large-scale donations to support regional youth organizations, medical facilities and more.

Simpson Family Fund Highlights

$50K to help St. Joseph Hospital purchase a 3-D mammography unit for its Cancer Care unit on California’s North Coast
$50K to support local youth through the Klamath Boys & Girls Club in Oregon
$50K to help preserve and renovate Community Lifeline, a cold-weather shelter in Shelton, Washington
$8,500 to an Arcata, California scouting troop to enable more families to attend wilderness and camping trips

Learn more about our contributions program

We focus our contributions on locations where we have significant operations or land holdings. To the extent possible, we support organizations that are of interest to or recommended by our employees.

We prefer to make capital contributions that will benefit our operating communities for the long term, as opposed to contributing operating funds.

Generally, we commit our support for one year at a time, considering the following factors as we determine the size of the contribution:

  • The degree of support from our employees.
  • The relative size and importance of our operations within the community and the requesting organization’s proximity to our local operations.
  • The needs of the organization or program that we plan to support.
  • The amount of any previous contributions our company has made.
  • The project’s ability to demonstrate broad-based community support (including from other companies, foundations and/or governments).

If you believe your project or organization meets our geographic criteria and guidelines, we invite you to apply for a grant. An email to one of the following outlining your request is most helfpul:
